The first of two combined-cycle plants with a capacity of 280 MW was commissioned at the Takhiatash Thermal Power Plant (TPP) on Friday, the Ministry of Energy said.
The Takhiatash TPP modernization project with the installation of two combined cycle power plants with a total capacity of 580 watts is aimed at covering the electricity needs of households in Karakalpakstan and Khorezm province.
The new units are being built by a consortium of Hyundai Engineering and Hyundai Engineering & Construction. The gas turbines and two generators were supplied by General Electric.
After the completion of the US$ 457 million project, the old units are expected to be decommissioned.
The capacity of five power units of the Takhiatash TPP is at 730 MW. The first power unit was commissioned in 1956, the last - in 1990.
