The deal between Uzbekistan and Russia for a nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan is "basically ready", with only technical aspects remaining, said the Russian Ambassador to Uzbekistan Vladimir Tyurdenev on December 21.

The nuclear power plant deal was planned to be signed by the end of 2019, and works at the priority site, the coast of Lake Tuzkan in Jizzakh province, was due at the beginning of 2020.

He noted that the parties are currently working on additional aspects. In particular, we are talking about reducing water consumption for the future plant. “But I can assure you that both parties proceed from the fact that the project should be implemented. This is confirmed at all levels. The question remains on the technical aspects of implementation,” the diplomat added.

In the summer of 2019, the director general of Uzatom agency, Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov, said that “We talked a lot about how much water and how it is used. The consumption of water at a nuclear power plant, which is used for steam generation, electricity generation, and cooling, is no more than that used at our current thermal power plants,” Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov said then.

The chief of Uzatom also stressed that the water of Lake Tuzkan will be sufficient to cool the reactors. “These calculations are underway and we are considering various cooling options,” he said.
