In 2021, Uzbekistan's public debt increased by $ 2.9 billion and has reached 38% to GDP, the Ministry of Finance said in a report.

Reportedly, as of January 1, 2022, Uzbekistan's public debt increased by $ 2.9 billion to reach $ 26.3 billion (including external public debt - $ 23.6 billion, domestic public debt - $ 2.7 billion) or 38% to GDP.

The share of public debt in GDP decreased from 39% at the beginning of 2021 to 38% as of January 1, 2022.

In 2021, 33 foreign loan agreements worth $ 4.92 billion were signed on behalf and under the guarantee of Uzbekistan. Of which:

  • volume of public external debt transactions involved to support the budget - $ 1.8 billion;
  • volume of external debt agreements signed to finance health, drinking water and sanitation, livestock, chemical industry development and other projects - $ 2 billion 508.6 million;
  • external loan agreements signed under the guarantee of the Republic of Uzbekistan - $ 611.7 million.

In 2021, the public external debt balance increased by $ 2.5 billion and the domestic debt balance increased by $ 464.1 million.

By the end of 2021, 25.2% or $ 5.9 billion of the total public external debt will be used to support the state budget, 13.2% or $ 3.1 billion to the electricity sector, 12.2% or $ 2.9 billion to the energy sector. sector, 11 % or $ 2.6 billion to transport and transport infrastructure, and 9.1 % or $ 2.1 billion to housing and communal services.

The bulk of the country's external debt from international financial institutions came from the Asian Development Bank ($ 5.2 billion), the World Bank ($ 4.3 billion) and the Islamic Development Bank ($ 0.9 billion).

71.9% of the foreign currency portfolio of Uzbekistan is in US dollars, 10.5% in Japanese yen, 8.4% in SDR (special borrowing rights), 4.6% in euros, 1.8% in soums. 2.8 % are other currencies.

Note: In 2017, Uzbekistan's public debt was at $ 11.5 billion (18.7% of GDP), in 2018 - $ 14.9 billion (28.3% of GDP), in 2019 - $ 17.8 billion (29.7% of GDP), $ 23.4 billion in 2020 (39 % of GDP), and $ 26.3 billion (38 % of GDP) in 2021.
