A woman in the Chiroqchi district of the Qashqadaryo region has stood trial on charges of driving her daughter-in-law to suicide. The case was reported by the news outlet Daryo, citing official criminal court records.
The couple had been married for nearly six years. In 2020, the defendant's son married the victim, who was 18 years old at the time. While the family initially lived together without any major friction, court documents state that relations between the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law later took a severe turn for the worse.
Beginning in January 2022, the 47-year-old defendant systematically berated the young woman over her housework, physically assaulted her, and repeatedly demanded that she divorce her son. During one heated argument, the woman drove her daughter-in-law back to her parents' house, declaring that she no longer wanted her in the family.
In court, the defendant admitted to hitting her daughter-in-law and returning her to her mother. However, she claimed she only did so expecting the parents to give their daughter a "disciplinary talking-to."
The accused pled only partially guilty, expressed remorse, and pleaded with the court for leniency. She also noted that since the daughter-in-law's death, she has been solely responsible for caring for the couple's three young children.
The court found the woman guilty under Article 103, Part 2, clause "a" of the Criminal Code of Uzbekistan, which covers driving a person to suicide who is financially or otherwise dependent on the perpetrator. She was sentenced to 5 years in prison. Notably, this specific charge typically carries a standard prison sentence ranging from 7 to 10 years.
