Uzbekistan is studying the possibility of taking part in the construction of the Nakhchivan railway, which is intended to provide access to the Turkish ports of Samsun and Istanbul. The presidential press service reported this following a presentation of major transport and logistics projects.
The initiative follows an announcement in August by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev that an international consortium could be formed to reconstruct the Nakhchivan railway. Companies and countries interested in investment, returns, and guaranteed cargo volumes along the route were invited to join.
As part of its broader push for sea access, Uzbekistan also plans to help build logistics infrastructure at the Caspian Sea ports of Aktau and Turkmenbashi in Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, respectively, as well as Baku in Azerbaijan, and at Poti and Anaklia on the Black Sea coast of Georgia.
According to the presidential press service, an agreement to establish a logistics center at the port of Poti has already been signed, and a feasibility study for the project is now underway. At the same time, officials are studying the possibility of Uzbekistan's involvement in developing the deep-water port of Anaklia.
The new routes are expected to expand Uzbekistan's export capacity for textile, chemical, agricultural, and mining and metallurgical products.
