Lieutenant Colonel Ilkhom Idirov has been appointed the new chief of Tashkent's Traffic Safety Department (TSD) under the Tashkent Police Department, sources within the department said. Idirov previously chiefed the Administrative Practice Division at the Interior Ministry's Road Safety Department and had led road safety departments in Kashkadarya and Syrdarya provinces.
He has replaced Mukhammad Adilov, who has enrolled in a graduate program at the Interior Ministry Academy — a requirement for appointment to senior leadership roles within police bodies.
This week, Tashkent's Council of People's Deputies heard a report from the TSD, delivered by Deputy Chief Elmurod Alimov. The council rated the department's performance in fulfilling its statutory duties as satisfactory, pointing to a "stabilization" in road safety conditions.
Council members instructed the department to draw up, within a week, a plan of "specific, targeted steps" to prevent fatal road accidents — though no concrete targets for reducing injuries or deaths were set. The council issued an identical directive in early 2025.
The department was also instructed to work with Tashkent's Main Directorate for Transport and Road Infrastructure Development to speed up comprehensive infrastructure upgrades and the digitalization of traffic management, including installing cameras at accident-prone locations and equipping buses with dashcams to record violations by other drivers.
The total number of officially registered accidents fell 9.5%, or by 44 incidents, from 464 to 420. Injury cases dropped 10%, also a decline of 44, from 438 to 394. The death toll, however, held steady at 26.
For the full previous year, the council had published comparable statistics: 1,225 accidents recorded (down 4.3%), 1,135 injury cases (down 4.5%), and 90 deaths (down by one case, or 1.1%).
Over the past six months, automated photo and video systems together with traffic police recorded 3,011,466 traffic violations across Tashkent.
Of these, 2,307,865 were captured by automated systems. Traffic police officers issued citations for 703,601 violations, including 21,208 serious offenses, of which 2,047 involved drunk driving. Officers also cited 165,390 pedestrians. In total, 43,769 vehicles were impounded.
The TSD reported sharp declines in certain categories of accidents, attributing the improvement to infrastructure upgrades and digitalization efforts.
Speeding-related accidents fell 47.8%, from 23 to 12; none were recorded in the Yakkasaray or Almazar districts. Accidents caused by illegal overtaking into oncoming lanes dropped 55.2%, from 29 to 13. Accidents caused by running red lights fell by half, from 24 to 12 — matching the decline in drunk-driving accidents, which fell from 6 to 3.
