U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio answered journalists’ questions about the war in Ukraine in Samarkand on Oct. 19. He said no one will win the war.

According to Rubio, President Donald Trump is ready for any step that could help end the conflict.

“The president has made clear that he wants the war to end. He wants the war between Ukraine and Russia to end. We will keep doing everything we can to help resolve the conflict... No one is winning the Ukraine war. People are dying every day. Things are being blown up and destroyed every day,” the secretary of state said.

Recalling Trump’s words, Rubio said 25,000 people are dying each month as a result of the war. He also responded to a statement by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy that the United States the U.S. had paused some intelligence sharing earlier this week. Zelenskiy made the remark earlier in an interview with NBC News.

“I don't know where he's getting these things from or why he's saying these things to the press. There's been no pause,” Rubio said.

Reports had earlier emerged that the United States did not warn Ukraine of a missile attack on Kyiv. Rubio responded that Ukraine’s early warning system had malfunctioned.

“A few nights ago, there was a software problem involving Ukraine's early warning system. EUCOM is looking at it. I can't comment on what happened last night,” the secretary of state said.

One journalist asked him: What evidence do you actually have that Putin is open to peace talks?

Rubio answered: What evidence? This is not a criminal case. This is about diplomacy. In diplomacy, you continue to try.

“Trump suspended the sanctions for 60 days because he wants to see if there's an opportunity for the talks that are going on right now,” Rubio concluded.
