Sarwar Usmon, a prominent and veteran Uzbek journalist who was once a fervent critic of the authorities during his long career with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's Uzbek Service (Ozodlik), has been officially admitted as an honorary member of the Journalists' Union of Uzbekistan.
The recognition marks a historic shift in the official perception of the veteran broadcaster, whose real name is Oktambek Karimov. The honorary membership card was officially presented to him during a roundtable discussion hosted at the Journalists' Union headquarters, attended by veteran media figures and press representatives.
From Sharp Critic to Honored Veteran
Being a voice of dissent for decades, operating under the pseudonym Sarwar Usmon, he was widely known for his sharp, analytical, and highly critical reporting on political and social issues in Uzbekistan while working from abroad for the U.S.-funded RFE/RL Uzbek Service.
Born in 1958 in Osh, Usmon graduated from the Republican Pedagogical Institute of Russian Language and Literature in Tashkent before dedicating his life to international journalism.
Public figures and social media analysts in Uzbekistan have widely viewed this move as a significant step toward acknowledging the contributions of independent journalists who historically challenged the state apparatus.
