Tashkent metro has joined the organizational structure of Uzbekistan Railways pursuant to the Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan, published on 28 October.

In the updated structure of the executive body of Uzbekistan Railways the company deputy chairman is listed as the chief of the Metro. Prior to that, Tashkent metro was part of ToshShaharTransHizmat, a government body responsible for Tashkent transport.

The Tashkent metro, the first in Central Asia, was launched in 1977. Its length was 12.2 km and it had nine stations - (a section of current Chilanzar line). The third Yunusobod line with six stations and a total length of 7.6 km was opened in September 2001. The total length of the three metro lines comprising 29 stations is 36.2 km.
