The building of the Uzbek National Academic Drama Theater in Tashkent is set to undergo a major capital renovation, according to a directive issued by the capital's Khokim, Shavkat Umurzakov, on June 25.
A total of 1.87 billion soums from the Tashkent Development Fund will be allocated toward the reconstruction of the theater and the improvement of its surrounding grounds. The Single Customer Service engineering company under the Tashkent Khokimiyat has been designated as the project coordinator.
The Uzbek National Academic Drama Theater traces its rich history back to 1914, when the pioneering intellectual Abdulla Avloniy founded the "Turon" theater troupe. The theater was named in honor of Hamza in 1929 and elevated to academic status in 1933. By a presidential decree issued on September 21, 2001, the institution was officially renamed the Uzbek National Academic Drama Theater.
