Turkiye's Aksa Elektrik has been selected to operate and expand the electricity grid in Uzbekistan's Samarkand province, under a project set to launch following an international tender.
Energy Minister Sherzod Khodjaev announced that the company emerged as the winner of the competitive bidding process for the contract.
According to the minister, all current employees of the Samarkand provincial electricity network will be retained and transferred to the new operator's payroll. Khodjaev added that the company plans to bring in only 10 to 15 foreign specialists, with the remainder of the workforce made up of local engineers and technicians.
As part of its operations in Uzbekistan, Aksa Elektrik is required to source at least 90 percent of the materials used in building, modernizing and reconstructing the province's power networks from domestic suppliers. The company is also obligated to meet a minimum investment threshold set under the terms of the agreement.
Company specialists are currently conducting an assessment of the province and drawing up development plans based on this technical groundwork. Officials say that, depending on the project's initial results, the model could be extended to other provinces of Uzbekistan in the future.
