Traffic patterns are changing at one of Tashkent's major intersections — where Mustaqillik Avenue meets Akkurgan Street — according to the capital's Road Traffic Organization Center (RTOC) and the Tashkent traffic police department (TBD).
Left turns from Mustaqillik onto Akkurgan Street will no longer be permitted. Drivers must now continue straight ahead, turn right toward Parkent Street after passing the site of the former Pushkin Square, merge back onto Mustaqillik, and then turn right to reach Akkurgan Street.
Drivers heading from Parkent Street onto Mustaqillik Avenue will no longer turn right to go around the square; instead, they should continue straight along what was formerly a one-way stretch of road, where traffic lights have now been installed.
"This decision is aimed at reducing traffic congestion at the intersection, ensuring smoother and more continuous traffic flow, and improving road safety," RTOC officials said.
The change follows a recent overhaul of a 1.7-kilometer stretch of Mustaqillik Avenue, where the asphalt, traffic lights and surrounding infrastructure were upgraded. Crews laid a new polymer-modified stone mastic asphalt (SMA-20) surface, and a bus stop near the former Pushkin Square site was restored.
