For the first time, Uzbek surgeons have successfully performed a simultaneous liver and kidney transplant on a single patient, Zamon reported in a story.
The complex procedure was carried out at the National Medical Center]. The operation was performed on a patient suffering from liver cirrhosis and end-stage chronic kidney failure, who had been undergoing hemodialysis for four years.
The patient, a woman from the Pakhtachi district of Samarkand province, had been battling liver disease for eight years. Her kidneys subsequently failed as well, forcing her onto regular hemodialysis for four years.
The woman's liver cirrhosis developed as a result of hepatitis C. Doctors had initially recommended she undergo the operation abroad, including in India, but she was unable to raise the funds needed to cover donor and treatment costs.
According to physicians, transplanting only the liver or only the kidney would likely not have been sufficient in this case. As a result, simultaneous transplantation of both organs was identified as the only solution capable of saving the patient's life.
At the National Medical Center, doctors performed the high-tech procedure, transplanting both the liver and the kidney. Specialists noted that operations of this complexity are typically carried out only in countries with advanced transplantology programs.
Doctors said the procedure marks an expansion of Uzbekistan's capacity to offer high-tech transplant care to patients suffering from severe liver and kidney failure.
