The number of people sentenced to prison in Uzbekistan rose by 2,133, or 22%, in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period last year, the Supreme Court said.
Reportedly, 11,703 people were sentenced to imprisonment nationwide between January and June, up from 9,570 in the same period of 2025.
Tashkent city recorded the highest number of prison sentences over the first six months of the year, with 2,030 people incarcerated. Fergana region followed with 1,462, and Tashkent region with 1,452. Karakalpakstan recorded the lowest figure, with 317 people sentenced to prison.
Two people from Tashkent city were sentenced to life imprisonment.
Among those convicted, 179 were found guilty of premeditated murder, while 1,376 were convicted of intentionally inflicting serious or moderate bodily harm. A further 1,789 people were convicted of hooliganism, and 5,788 of drug-related crimes.
Nearly 3,605 people were convicted of corruption-related offenses during the first half of the year. Of these, 779 received prison sentences, 614 were fined, 1,479 were sentenced to correctional labor, and 711 received restriction-of-freedom sentences.
