The Foreign Ministry has issued a statement sharply condemning an attempted drone attack directed toward the city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia.
"We express our full solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and consider any actions that threaten holy sites, civilians, or civilian infrastructure to be unacceptable," the ministry said in its statement.
The ministry called on all parties to "exercise maximum restraint, strictly abide by the norms of international law, and respect the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of states."
It also voiced support for efforts to ease tensions and ensure security and stability in the region.
The statement came a day after Turki al-Malki, spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen's internationally recognized government, said Saudi air defenses intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone heading toward Mecca on the evening of September 15. Al-Malki described the safety of Mecca and its pilgrims as a "red line." Houthi representatives denied that any attack on Mecca had taken place.
