The governor of Tashkent province, Zoyir Mirzayev, has approved steps to relocate seven cemeteries located on the site of the new Tashkent international airport under construction. The decision was made on September 15.
The document was drawn up in line with the November 25, 2025 presidential decree on implementing the new international airport project, as well as in accordance with the Burial and Funeral Affairs Law, an opinion from the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan, and sanitary requirements.
In Quyichirchiq district, two cemeteries in the Sergeli neighborhood are to be relocated.
In O'rtachirchiq district, the list includes five additional cemeteries located within the Yangi Yo'l neighborhood.
The decision notes that burials at these cemeteries ceased many years ago.
The document takes into account an opinion issued by the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan on April 10, 2026. According to that opinion, if there is reason to believe that buried remains have already decomposed into soil, the land may be repurposed through the established procedure. However, if bone remains are found when graves are opened, they must be "carefully and respectfully collected and reburied at other cemeteries."
The work must be carried out in compliance with sanitary-epidemiological, environmental, architectural, religious and public requirements.
The decision also takes into account favorable sanitary assessments issued by the district sanitary-epidemiological welfare and public health departments of Quyichirchiq and O'rtachirchiq districts.
