President Shavkat Mirziyoyev began his visit to Andijan Province by inspecting the ongoing reconstruction project at Andijan International Airport.
Built in 1978 and designated as an international hub in 2013, the airport launched the first phase of its airfield complex overhaul in the spring of 2023. Following a two-year closure, the facility reopened in March 2025.
The upgraded infrastructure can now accommodate large wide-body aircraft. It features a newly installed high-precision visual signaling system, enabling flights to land safely at night and in heavy fog. Moving forward, the facility is designated to serve as the primary diversion airfield for the entire Fergana Valley, ensuring that flights disrupted by adverse weather no longer need to reroute to Tashkent.
Construction is currently underway on a new two-story passenger terminal designed with long-term expansion in mind. Once completed, the terminal will increase the airport’s passenger handling capacity fivefold from its current rate of 200 passengers per hour. Meanwhile, the 50-year-old legacy terminal remains operational; plans call for its eventual demolition, though a large-scale mural in the waiting hall will be preserved.
The total cost of the airfield complex reconstruction stands at 1.1 trillion soums. Currently, seven airlines operate regular domestic and international routes out of Andijan International Airport, with plans to scale up annual flight frequencies from 808 to 2,500.
