By a presidential decree Erkinjon Turdimov has been appointed first deputy PM and Education and Science Minister of Uzbekistan, president's spokesman Sherzod Asadov said.
Turdimov was relieved of his post as governor of Syrdarya province. MPs in the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis had earlier approved his candidacy, Asadov said.
The decree created the post of first deputy prime minister and minister of education and science within the executive structure of the Cabinet of Ministers. It also established a secretariat for education, science and health care.
The first deputy prime minister will provide overall leadership and coordination of the heads of ministries, committees, agencies and inspectorates, the chair of the Council of Ministers of Karakalpakstan, provincial governors and the Tashkent mayor on tasks in education, science and health care, the document said.
Oversight and organization of the implementation of those tasks were assigned to Saida Mirziyoyeva, head of the Presidential Administration.
Turdimov, 57, had been in charge of the Syrdarya province since January 2025. He was governor of Samarkand province from July 2018 to late November 2024, and earlier headed Surkhandarya province from December 2016. From 2008 to 2016 he was governor of Navoi province.
The Ministry of Education and Science was created by presidential decree in early October through the merger of the Ministry of Preschool and School Education and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation.
