President Shavkat Mirziyoyev said universities must clearly define what kind of specialists they train and for whom, as he explained the appointment of a former provincial governor to lead the new Ministry of Education and Science, a Daryo correspondent reported.
Mirziyoyev spoke at a meeting with investors and entrepreneurs in New Tashkent.
“Numbers have grown, but quality is lacking,” the president said. He added that he had not brought a man who has served as governor of four provinces to the Education Ministry for nothing.
The ministry was created by presidential decree on Oct. 3 through the merger of the Ministry of Preschool and School Education and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation.
Erkinjon Turdimov was appointed on Oct. 9 as first deputy prime minister and minister of education and science.
Before his appointment, Turdimov served as the governor of Sirdaryo province.
