The chief of a state-run water supply agency in Qibray district, Tashkent province, has been detained on suspicion of taking a bribe, the Department under the Prosecutor General’s Office said.

The official, identified as U.Y., was detained with evidence as he accepted $5,000 in his office during an operation, the Department said.

He had demanded $16,000 from a man, J.B., in exchange for telling a court that all defects at the man’s home in the Goliblar mahalla had been remedied and for dropping a claim against the property, according to the Department.

The Department added that U.Y. had told the man that although the home was built with permits from the relevant organisations, he would go to court and demand action because it stood close to a canal.

A criminal case has been opened under Article 210 of the Criminal Code (Bribe-taking), with investigation underway.

Earlier, it was reported that a school director in Kashkadarya province had been caught taking a bribe.
