Today on October 21, Uzbek Language Day, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a law changing four letters in the Latin-based Uzbek alphabet.
The law provides for the following changes:
- O‘ o‘ → Ö ö
- G‘ g‘ → Ğ ğ
- Sh sh → Ş ş
- Ch ch → Ç ç
- The letter combination “ng” shall be removed from the alphabet as a standalone letter.
The apostrophe (tutuq belgisi) remains in the alphabet.
The law shall take effect six months after its official publication.
