Air quality in Tashkent deteriorated briefly overnight from Oct. 23 to 24 because of weather conditions, the Ecology Committee said.
Readings on the international AQI were mostly “unhealthy for sensitive groups” in the evening and overnight, and “unhealthy” in some areas. The national index stayed at “yellow.”
Falling temperatures, weak winds and a temperature inversion limited air exchange in the lower atmosphere, allowing fine particles to accumulate near the ground, the committee said.
Meteosat satellite images showed short-term dust haze over Tashkent and adjacent areas from 10 p.m. on Oct. 23 to 9 a.m. on Oct. 24.
A Special Commission monitored the air with instruments in eight districts overnight. At most stations, PM2.5 pollution fell in the “unhealthy” and “very unhealthy” categories on the international AQI.
Air quality on Oct. 24 is forecast to be mostly “moderate” on the international AQI and “yellow” on the national index during the day. Toward evening, it could worsen to “unhealthy for sensitive groups” in some areas.
The commission is continuing to monitor air quality.
It was earlier reported that air quality in Tashkent could temporarily worsen overnight into Oct. 24.
