Preparations to build the first Uzbek school in Türkiye, in Istanbul’s Bakırköy district, are to be stepped up after talks between Uzbekistan’s Consul General in Istanbul and local officials, the Dunyo news agency reported.
Consul General Sherzod Abdunazarov met Ayşegül Ovalıoğlu, head of the Bakirkoy district administration, to discuss the project. They agreed to start construction as soon as possible, and the district administration said it was ready to help during the construction and organizational stages.
The government of Uzbekistan is financing the school, and Turkish companies will build it. Classes will follow Uzbekistan’s education system and be taught by teachers from Uzbekistan.
Both sides said the school would be important for raising the children of Uzbekistani families living in Türkiye with respect for national values and their mother tongue, according to the report.
The same day, Abdunazarov held talks with representatives of Türkiye’s Ministry of National Education and the leadership of the National Education Directorate of Istanbul province. The Turkish side presented the findings of its expert review of the project and information on how the identified shortcomings will be addressed.
Based on those recommendations, the consul general also held a working meeting with staff of O’zguven, the company that designed the school.
The report did not say when construction would begin or when the school would open.
Background: A foundation stone for the school was laid in January 2026 in the presence of the presidents of Uzbekistan and Türkiye. Since then, work has continued on completing the necessary paperwork and designing the facility.
