Air quality today in Tashkent on Oct. 28 is expected to reach the Unhealthy level on the international Air Quality Index (AQI), the National Committee for Ecology and Climate Change of Uzbekistan said, citing data from the Republican Special Commission for the Implementation of Urgent Measures to Improve the Environmental Situation.
On the national index, the forecast is mostly Moderate, rising at times to Unhealthy for sensitive groups. Air quality may stay Unhealthy in the evening, the committee said.
Overnight, air quality was Unhealthy on the AQI and Very unhealthy at some monitoring stations. On the national index, the citywide average for PM2.5 particles was Moderate and for PM10 particles Unhealthy for sensitive groups.
The committee said the pollution was caused by falling temperatures, very weak wind and an accumulation of air masses over the city and neighboring districts. “These conditions limited the dispersal of pollutants, and as a result locally generated emissions remained in the surface layer of the atmosphere,” it said.
Children, older people, pregnant and nursing women, and people with cardiovascular and respiratory diseases should stay indoors in the evening and at night where possible, the committee advised. Those who must go out should wear a protective mask and avoid long periods outdoors. Windows should be kept closed in the evening and at night.
