The State Labor Inspectorate said some local administrations in Uzbekistan continue to unlawfully require employees to work outside set working hours, despite earlier warnings.
The inspectorate said it had sent warning letters to all province, city and district administrations, urging them to observe working-hours rules. It said officials are being held liable under the established procedure for violations identified.
“Labor legislation must be strictly observed when employees are required to work outside working hours,” the inspectorate said.
It said that observing working-time and rest-time rules is an important guarantee of protecting workers’ health, capacity to work and family life.
“Violating an employee’s right to rest means violating their labor rights guaranteed by law,” the inspectorate said.
The agency said it will monitor every complaint and take the measures set out in law against violations it identifies.
In September, the inspectorate said it was receiving complaints that employees in some areas were being forced to carry out tasks outside working hours and on days off. It stressed then that forced labor is prohibited by law and that employees may not be made to work without their consent under threat of punishment or pressure.
