The art of making and playing the rubab has been included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The decision was approved on December 4 at the 19th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO in Asuncion, Paraguay.
According to Dunyo, the nomination was initiated by Uzbekistan together with Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Iran.
The committee's decision noted that the rubab was one of the oldest musical instruments in Central, South and Southwest Asia.
It emphasized that this art promotes cultural and social cohesion, the development of cultural exchanges and solidarity, and also contributes to education, gender equality and sustainable development.
The art of making and playing the rubab has become the 16th element of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity included in the UNESCO Representative List at the initiative of Uzbekistan.
