The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) within three days - October 15-17 - delivered to Termez more than 100 tons of humanitarian aid for Afghanistan, the UNHCR press service said.

The cargo included essential items. Before being sent to Afghanistan, humanitarian aid will be stored at the Termez Cargo Center.

“We would like to thank the government of Uzbekistan for cooperation in providing humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan. We believe this new aid delivery route will contribute to global efforts to overcome the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and help the millions of people affected,” said Dumitru Lipkanu, UNHCR Deputy Representative for Central Asia in Termez.

The Termez Cargo Center terminal is located less than 2 km from the border of Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. Due to its location, size and capacity, and the services it provides, the terminal is seen as an important center for helping the Afghan people.

UNHCR, as part of the UN Country Team in Uzbekistan, together with partners, continues to provide assistance to the Afghan people, the statement. In Afghanistan, according to the agency, more than 3.5 million people are currently internally displaced persons, more than half a million of them since the beginning of this year.
