A man has been detained in Ferghana province on suspicion of offering to secure someone's appointment as mayor of Uchkuprik District in exchange for $210,000, the Department for Combating Economic Crimes under Prosecutor General's Office reported.
The operation was carried out by the department in cooperation with other law enforcement agencies. According to investigators, a man identified only as S.A., who posed as an assistant to an arbitration court judge, told another man, identified as I.D., that he could guarantee his appointment to the post through well-placed contacts.
S.A. was apprehended as he was receiving part of the promised payment — $100,000 in cash.
Authorities have opened a criminal case charging him with attempted fraud under Article 168, read in conjunction with Article 25 of the Criminal Code (attempted crime), as well as complicity in bribery under Article 211, read in conjunction with Article 28 (forms of complicity in a crime). The investigation is ongoing.
