The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan "strongly condemns the provocative assault" carried out on August 4 on the Azerbaijani embassy in London, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“We deem absolutely unacceptable any actions that pose a threat to life and health of members of diplomatic missions. We call for a comprehensive investigation into this incident and bringing all those involved to justice,” the statement said.

“The Uzbek authorities expressed support for fraternal Azerbaijan in ensuring the security and protection of its citizens abroad,” the Foreign Ministry added.

According to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, the attack was carried out by a radical religious group. Having entered the embassy building, members of the group committed an act of vandalism, tearing down Azerbaijan’s flag and writing inscriptions in Arabic on the building. Standing on the building's balcony, they waved religious flags and shouted radical religious slogans.

UK media write that the attackers were members of the Shiite Muslims organization, the Mahdi Servants Union. London police arrested eight people.

The embassy staff were not injured. The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry drew the attention of the British authorities to the need to comply with the requirements of international law to ensure the protection of diplomatic missions and diplomats.
