Uzbekistan acknowledged the suspension of power exports to Afghanistan and announced plans to resume supplies from January 25, the Ministry of Energy said.
Reportedly, supplies stopped on January 14 due to a extreme cold, which prompted problems in gas supply to thermal power plants (TPPs), which run on this type of fuel for 85% and provide 90% of electricity generation in the country.
The Ministry of Energy said that supplies to Afghanistan were temporarily stopped as a result of fuel shortages and various malfunctions, as well as to ensure a stable energy supply to consumers in Uzbekistan.
The Ministry emphasized that it had warned the energy company Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) about a force majeure situation.
It added that lectricity produced in Uzbekistan and intended for domestic consumption is not exported. Part of the power imports in line with the intergovernmental agreement is exported to Afghanistan (as per the signed agreements).
On the eve the Foreign Minister of Afghanistan called on Uzbekistan to comply with the terms of the power supply agreement. It is reported that in Kabul electricity is turned on for an hour a day.
