Samarkand was declared the cultural capital of the CIS in 2024. This was announced at the meeting of the CIS foreign ministers. The city of Samarkand will become the cultural capital of the Commonwealth of Independent States in 2024.
Since 2010, the cultural capital of the CIS is chosen annually by the Council of Heads of State of the Commonwealth. Over the past years, Brest (Belarus), Shymkent (Kazakhstan), Kolob (Tajikistan), Ganja (Azerbaijan), Mari (Turkmenistan), Voronezh (Russia), Mogilyov (Belarus), Astana (Kazakhstan), Doshghiz (Turkmenistan), Dushanbe (Tajikistan) and others received the status of cultural capital.
In 2023, the Russian city of St. Petersburg was declared the cultural capital of the CIS.
