Kassym-Jomart Tokayev declared national mourning on October 29 after an emergency at a mine in Karaganda. The death toll at the Kostenko mine, owned by ArcelorMittal Temirtau, has increased to 21 dead; the search for 23 miners is ongoing.

ArcelorMittal Temirtau stated that, presumably, a gas methane explosion occurred in the lava. After the incident, president Kassym-Jomart Tokayet ordered to terminate cooperation with the company.

He instructed the government to provide all necessary assistance to the families of the victims, the press service of the Kazakh leader reported.

Rescuers continue to work at the scene of the accident.
