The European Union Delegation to Uzbekistan has announced the commencement of grant projects during the inauguration event titled "EU Support to Civil Society Organizations in Uzbekistan", EEAS reported. The launch of these EU-funded initiatives, valued at over €3.5mn, signifies a collaborative stride towards fostering empowerment, particularly among women and marginalized groups within the country.
The event, attended by representatives from international and EU-based civil society organizations alongside local partners and state officials, served as a platform to underline the commitment towards nurturing civil society entities in Uzbekistan. Charlotte Adriaen, the Ambassador of the European Union to Uzbekistan, emphasized the EU's dedication to amplifying voices, promoting inclusivity, and advancing democracy through targeted projects.
"Today's EU-funded project launch is just a glimpse into our ongoing commitment to bolster civil society organizations in Uzbekistan. Our yearly efforts are dedicated to empowering these vital entities, fostering inclusivity, vibrancy, and democracy," stated Ambassador Adriaen.
Acknowledging the pivotal role civil society organizations (CSOs) play in advocating for vulnerable communities and facilitating citizen participation, Bobur Bekmurodov, Chairman of the Movement “Yuksalish”, highlighted the importance of the EU-funded projects in driving positive change within Uzbekistan.
The EU-funded initiatives, stemming from a call for proposals initiated by the EU Delegation in Uzbekistan in 2023, are slated to operate from 2024 to 2026. These projects encompass a wide array of focus areas including capacity building for inclusive development, advocating for gender equality, advancing the Green Agenda, and promoting gender-responsive approaches.
Among the EU-funded projects presented during the kick-off event are initiatives such as "Empowering Voices for Inclusive Development" implemented by AFEW International, "EU Tabassum (Smile)" led by Deutsche Welle, and "Promoting Gender Transformative Communities through Civil Participation" spearheaded by DVV International Uzbekistan.
Other projects include endeavors aimed at sustainable water management, institutional capacity building for CSOs, combating gender-based violence, and promoting economic empowerment in green and circular economy sectors.
The European Union, founded on the principles of democracy, human rights, and equality, acts globally to foster sustainable development across societies, environments, and economies. Through these grant projects, the EU reaffirms its commitment to supporting the empowerment of civil society and driving positive societal change in Uzbekistan.
