Despite sanctions, more lumber and valuable round timber are being exported from Russia, Vedomosti newspaper reported with reference to Roslesinforg.

Timber exports increased by 2.5 percent year on year. Compared to 2021, it rose by 8.7 percent. Against the backdrop of the EU embargo on the import of wood, plywood, wood-based panels and pellets from Russia, growth slowed, as Europe was the main export market for Russian timber manufacturers.

In 2023, Russian exporters increased wood sales to friendly countries. Their increased by a third compared to pre-sanction 2021 and reached a level of $4 billion in monetary terms. According to Comtrade analysts, China has become the top buyer of Russian timber. Last year, China purchased products from the Russian Federation totaling $2.4 billion. Uzbekistan took the second spot, paying $586 million for timber.
