The speed limit on five streets in Tashkent could be changed. Announced today the deputy chief of the Traffic police at the Tashkent police department, Elmurod Alimov at a meeting of the city council of people's deputies.

"We propose changing the speed limit to 80 km/h on Bunyodkor, Sebzar, Akhmad Donish streets, as well as on the Tashkent Ring Road and New Uzbekistan Street," he said.

The speed limit in cities was reduced from 70 to 60 km/h in April 2023.

Furthermore, one-way traffic is also being mulled for 12 streets. According to him, this initiative is being put forward based on the findings of the study, as well as on the basis of an analysis of domestic and foreign experience, aimed at preventing congestion and traffic accidents, ensuring traffic safety and creating convenience for road users.

He also drew attention to problems with the power supply, which in recent months have often led to traffic lights being turned off.

“As a result, the traffic lights stop working, which leads to chaos on the roads. Such situations last for five to six, eight or two hours. What do we do in such cases? We use the physical strength of the inspectors,” Alimov explained.

To solve this problem, he proposed installing uninterruptible power supplies at central intersections.

“We propose installing UPS at 500 traffic lights in the center of the capital. This will allow the traffic lights to work autonomously for another five to six hours after the power is turned off — until the power supply is restored,” he said.

One of the deputies asked when the new speed limit would take effect. “We have submitted a proposal to the mayor’s office and the relevant authorities. We will announce it,” Alimov replied.

In early July, measures to ensure road safety, improve infrastructure and reduce congestion were discussed at a videoconference chaired by the President of Uzbekistan. As part of the implementation of the instructions of the head of state, a working group was created at the national and regional levels.

In 2022, the president approved the 5-year Safe and Smooth Road National Program, which defines indicators for improving road infrastructure by provinces.
