The Institute for Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) was granted observer status by the United Nations (UN) during the 45th plenary meeting of the 75th session of the Organization's General Assembly.

The application for the observer status and the draft resolution was initiated by the Chinese government and supported by the co-sponsors of all other CAREC member countries: Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

“This is a recognition of the CAREC Institute's relevance to the UN development agenda, its contribution to regional cooperation towards achieving sustainable development goals,” said Institute director Syed Shakeel Shah.

According to Deputy Director Liang Zichen, the CAREC Institute is making significant efforts to disseminate international best practices drawn from the available global knowledge base and help improve the effectiveness of governance, policy formulation and evaluation, service standards, and people's livelihoods in their countries.

The CAREC Institute has the same observer status as the Asian Development Bank, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.
