The number of students from Uzbekistan studying in the United States surpassed 1,000 last year – a new record and an increase of 72.6 percent from the previous academic year, according to the 2023 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange released today.  

A record 1,089 Uzbekistani students were studying at higher education institutions during the 2022-23 academic year up from 631 in 2021-22, the report said. The majority - or 57.2 percent - were enrolled at the undergraduate level; 29.9 percent were at the graduate level, 7.9 percent were pursuing optional practical training, and 5 percent were enrolled in non-degree programs, such as English language or short-term studies. 

Overall, the number of international students in the United States surpassed 1 million last academic year, an increase of 14 percent from the previous year, to reach a new high of 1,057,188, according to report. 

Open Doors 2023, by the Institute of International Education (IIE) and the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), highlights that the United States remains the top destination for international students. These students, who continue to recognize the United States’ global leadership in higher education, hail from nearly every country in the world. 

In the 2021-22 academic year, 188,753 U.S. students studied abroad for academic credit, representing a 13-fold increase over the prior year and more than halfway back to pre-pandemic levels.
