On Friday, June 21, 2024, an exhibition of national Romanian costumes, combined with elements of modern clothing design inspired by traditional Uzbek clothing will open at the Gallery of the Academy of Arts of the Republic of Uzbekistan (35 Sadyk Azimov street).
The event is dedicated to the Universal Day of the Romanian Blouse, an item of clothing included by UNESCO in the List of Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
The exhibition will be open to visitors from June 21, 2024 to June 27, 2024.
The event was organized by the Romanian Embassy in the Republic of Uzbekistan with the kind support of the Academy of Arts of the Republic of Uzbekistan, with the participation of the exquisite Uzbek fashion designer Markhamat Umarova.
The exhibition will be inaugurated by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania to the Republic of Uzbekistan, H.E. Mr. Daniel Cristian Ciobanu and President of the Academy of Arts of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Akmal Nur.
June 24th was established by Decree of the President of Romania as the day to celebrate the traditional Romanian blouse, a valuable piece of national folk costume, which for centuries was made in the homes of Romanian peasants from natural materials, woven themselves at home, and decorated with hand-sewn ornaments made of yarn, dyed in natural colors. The designs, which vary from region to region, are of rare beauty and have a meaning that is lost in the mists of time.
Markhamat Umarova is a fashion designer, founder of the MARU brand. Winner of the Certificate of Quality from UNESCO and trainer in UNESCO projects. She represented Uzbekistan with her collection at the US State Department, Harvard, Berlin, London and other international fashion shows. Her participation in this project turns the traditional exhibition of Romanian folk costumes from Tashkent into a meeting of the cultures and textile traditions of Romania and the Republic of Uzbekistan - a delicate inclusion of Uzbek textile traditions in the traditional Romanian costume.
Romania pays great attention to the development of relations with Uzbekistan at all levels, including in the field of culture, as a connecting link that can best bring our peoples together. From February 19, 2024 to February 26, 2024, the Romanian Embassy in the Republic of Uzbekistan organized an exhibition dedicated to the personality and work of the Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi at the House of Photography in Tashkent, together with the Kamoliddin Bekhzod Institute of Fine Arts. On March 1, 2024, a traditional Romanian spring celebration called “Martisor” took place in Tashkent. From March 27, 2024 to March 31, 2024, a photo exhibition dedicated to the Romanian classical music composer George Enescu was held in Tashkent, and on March 27, 2024, the documentary film “Maria, the Heart of Romania,” dedicated to the personality of Queen Maria of Romania, was shown. From May 1, 2024 to May 4, 2024, Romania took part in the International Folklore Festival “Boysun Bahori” with an excellent performance by the artistic ensemble “Doina Gorgiului” from the city of Targu Jiu. On May 8, 2024, as part of the VIII International Jazz Festival in Tashkent, a concert was held by the famous Romanian trumpeter Petre Ionutsescu. On May 18, 2024, the Romanian Embassy in Tashkent took part in the XX charitable Festival of cultural traditions and national dishes among diplomatic missions and received a diploma on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan.
