Urgench airport will resume operations on August 5 at 11:00 a.m., as the construction and repair work were completed ahead of schedule, Uzbekistan Airports said.

The airport closed on July 20 due to the start of a major overhaul of the runway. During the reconstruction, all flights were redirected to Nukus airport.

Reportedly, a great deal of work was completed in two weeks. In particular, the runway surface was replaced and reinforced along the entire 3,000 m length and the 45 m width, and the second and third taxiways were overhauled. This will allow the airport to receive wide-body aircraft such as Boeing 787 and Airbus A330, which will make it possible to increase the number of flights and passenger traffic to Urgench city.

The last time the runway in Urgench underwent a major overhaul was in 1997. Partially damaged sections of the strip were repaired in 2018.
