The UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, Balakrishnan Rajagopal, will visit Uzbekistan on August 19-30, Dunyo news agency said.

The Special Rapporteur will study the state of affairs of protection and implementation of the right to adequate housing in the Uzbek legislation and practice, including affordability, physical accessibility and suitability of housing, access to services and forced evictions.

He will analyze the measures taken by the Government of Uzbekistan to ensure the right to adequate housing for all groups of the population in the country.

The expert will also consider issues related to the impact of the climate crisis on the right to adequate housing, as well as the participation of residents in decision-making on housing and urban development.

In addition to Tashkent, Balakrishnan Rajagopal will visit Jizzakh, Samarkand and Bukhara, as well as nearby areas, including student accommodation and shelters for victims of domestic violence and homeless people.

He will hold meetings with representatives of central and regional authorities, judges, representatives of civil society and the business community operating in the housing sector.

A concluding report on the visit is expected to be presented to the UN Human Rights Council in March 2025.
