During the session of the Legislative Chamber today, MPs reviewed and passed amendments to the Detention in Criminal Proceedings Law, preventing the use of torture during criminal proceedings and introducing mandatory medical examination of detainees before their placement in a pre-trial detention center.
The amendments also provide for mandatory notification of prosecutor in the event that detainees sustain bodily injuries or trauma during medical examination. This measure is aimed at promptly preventing violations of detainees’ rights.
The MPs emphasized that the passing of amendments would be an important step in the fight against torture and other illegal actions, and would also enhance the protection of the rights of persons in custody.
