At the plenary session of the Legislative Chamber today, the MPs unanimously passed the resolution abolishing the Samarkand district and expanding the territory of Samarkand city, the press service of the lower house said.
The city's borders are reportedly being updated "with the aim of transforming Samarkand into a 'million-plus city,' constructing residential and non-residential buildings with modern architectural solutions, and creating decent living conditions through the development of territorial infrastructure.
According to the document, the Samarkand district is being abolished as an independent administrative-territorial unit.
1,410.6 hectares of land is being transferred to Samarkand from Akdarya district, 1,242.3 hectares from Pastdargom district, 13,308 hectares from Samarkand district, and 1,265.6 hectares from Taylak district.
While, 518 hectares of city land and 1,551 hectares of Samarkand District land are being transferred to Pastdargom District, and 28,295 hectares of Samarkand District land are being transferred to Taylak District. The land categories being transferred to the city and districts remain unchanged.
Thus, Samarkand's territory will expand from 11,800 hectares to 28,900 hectares, and its population will increase from 604,000 to 882,000.
As part of new residential communities projects in the town of Shirin, the territory of Temir Yo'l Orti, and the Karasu-2 community, 710 apartment buildings are planned, designed to accommodate 309,000 people.
According to the Legislative Chamber, new tourism projects will be implemented in Samarkand. The draft of the resolution had been previously discussed locally and at the provincial and district councils of people's deputies, where the cartographic representation of the borders and their classification were also approved, the report states.
At a meeting in November 2025, the President Mirziyoyev announced that 17,500 hectares were proposed for annexation to Samarkand. At that time, in addition to the aforementioned districts, lands in the Payarik district were planned to be added to the city, but these lands have not been included in the final document.
