The center will be the sole government agency responsible for managing radioactive waste, from transportation in specialized vehicles to long-term storage.

The government decree outlines the center's main tasks:

  • sorting, processing, and long-term storage of radioactive waste generated during work with domestic and imported sources of ionizing radiation, as well as those that have failed;
  • developing innovative methods for radioactive waste management and conducting scientific research;
  • implementing digital and information technologies, and exchanging information with government agencies.

The center will be headquartered o the premises of an existing disposal facility at the Institute of Nuclear Physics.
