An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) mission is due to visit Uzbekistan in the second half of 2026 to review the progress of nuclear power plant project, Uzatom’s press service said.
On the sidelines of the Second International Nuclear Energy Summit in Paris Uzatom’s Director Azim Akhmedkhadzhayev and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi discussed bilateral cooperation.
The parties also discussed the start of the first concrete work at the site of the first Uzbekistan nuclear power plant in Farish district of Jizzakh province.
The IAEA director general emphasized the significance of the project and its distinctive feature—the planned integration of large and small reactors in a single project, the press service added.
Following the meeting, the IAEA Director General confirmed the Agency’s commitment to continuing to support the implementation of Uzbekistan's nuclear program. He accepted an invitation to participate in the ceremony to begin the first concrete work.
The parties also expressed reciprocal interest in increasing the number of Uzbek experts in the IAEA Secretariat. Reportedly, this step will allow for more effective integration of national experience into international projects and strengthen the country's human resources in the nuclear industry.
