Bakhtiyor Islamov, the Chairperson of the Supreme Court of Uzbekistan, has been removed from office ahead of schedule. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev submitted the proposal to the Senate, the president’s spokesperson, Sherzod Asadov said.
The Senate council meeting adopted the resolution to dismiss Bakhtiyor Islamov during its session on June 18.
Islamov was elected Chairman of the Supreme Court on August 10, 2022. Under the Constitution, the head of the Supreme Court and their deputies are elected by the Senate upon the president's nomination for a five-year term. Consequently, his tenure was originally set to expire in August 2027.
Robakhon Mahmudova has been named the new Chairperson of the Supreme Court. The Senate elected her during the June 18 session following a nomination by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
Mahmudova, 67, has served as the leader of the Adolat (Justice) Social Democratic Party since January 2024. Prior to that role, she served as the First Deputy Chairperson of the Supreme Court and headed the Judicial Panel for Administrative Cases starting in July 2020.
