Uzbekistan may develop a bill to restrict social media use for children under 16. Minister of Preschool and School Education Ezozkhon Karimova shared this with a Gazeta.uz correspondent on June 26 following an event at the ministry.
The journalist noted that many countries worldwide, including neighboring Kazakhstan, are discussing and implementing initiatives to limit phone and social media use by minors. They then asked if such a step is possible in Uzbekistan.
According to Ezozkhon Karimova, this issue has already been discussed with deputies and senators. The current plan is to draft a bill and open it for public discussion. She noted that while completely cutting children off from phones is impossible, establishing a culture and standards for their use is essential.
"We live in a technological age; we cannot simply take phones away from our children. Of course, phones are necessary. However, there must be both a culture and a sense of moderation in how they are used. An order was previously issued requiring students to leave their phones upon entering school, and code-of-conduct rules exist. Yet, while these rules work in some places, they do not work in others. We now want to bring this under strict control and legally restrict social media use for children under 16," Ezozkhon Karimova stated.
