A Regional Center for Knowledge and Skills in Atomic Energy will be established in Tashkent, according to a Cabinet of Ministers decree that took effect on June 27.
Based on the document, the center is being created at the joint proposal of the Atomic Energy Agency and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation. It will operate as a distinct internal division within the Tashkent branch of the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (Moscow Engineering Physics Institute). The center will not hold the status of a separate legal entity and will utilize the existing infrastructure of the MEPhI branch. It is designed to serve as a scientific and practical hub for specialists across Central Asia.
According to the decree, the primary objectives of the center include:
- Developing training modules and organizing practical workshops for Central Asian specialists on the design, construction, and safe operation of nuclear facilities in line with international standards.
- Conducting simulation-based training sessions for reactor and turbine department personnel, utilizing the branch's modern educational laboratories and nuclear power plant simulators.
- Providing expert consulting services to Central Asian states on establishing national nuclear infrastructure and fostering a culture of nuclear safety, based on International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recommendations.
The center’s regulations, staffing blueprint, and organizational structure will be approved within one month. Measures to staff the facility with qualified professionals will be implemented within three months.
On June 5, construction officially began on the first power unit of Uzbekistan’s integrated nuclear power plant. Furthermore, starting August 1, 2026, individuals in Uzbekistan who report violations of industrial, radiation, or nuclear safety regulations will receive monetary rewards.
