Uzbekistan will open a new border checkpoint, Keskanyor, on its frontier with Kyrgyzstan in Andijan province, according to an announcement made today at a meeting chaired by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
The meeting set out major projects to expand Andijan's transport and logistics capacity. Mirziyoyev noted that Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan have agreed to open the Keskanyor checkpoint, which will be twice the size of the existing Dustlik crossing. Officials were instructed to draw up a design and begin construction within three months. The new crossing is expected to raise cargo throughput by two to three times and cut transit times by a week.
The China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway will make it possible to increase freight volumes tenfold, to 15 million tonnes a year. To that end, officials were ordered to start work by the end of the year on a $600 million logistics complex covering 300 hectares in Kurgantepa and Khanabad.
To handle the anticipated traffic, design work will begin on a 78-kilometer toll road between Khanabad and Andijan.
A high-speed train between Tashkent and Andijan began service this month, cutting the journey from six hours to four. Construction of a toll highway between Tashkent and Andijan is due to start next year. The 314-kilometer road will be fully usable in all conditions, including rain and snow, the director of the Avtoyolinvest Agency has said.
