The Uzbek Ministry of Energy, in cooperation with the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade, with support from the EBRD and the Japanese government, attracted a consortium of international experts to develop a roadmap to explore the possibility of creating a carbon-neutral electricity generation sector in Uzbekistan by 2050.
“The Republic of Uzbekistan is taking a pro-active action on climate change in the context of its contribution to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change mitigation and adaptation. The power generation sector is the backbone of the economy and is responsible for a significant share of the country's greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, decarbonization of electricity production will play a decisive role in achieving Uzbekistan's climate goals,” the Ministry of Energy said.
The expert report on Uzbekistan's carbon neutral energy sector defines a carbon neutrality roadmap for the electricity sector, based on the findings of the Ministry of Energy Concept for 2020-2030 and expands the analysis to 2050.
The key finding of the report is that Uzbekistan's transition to a zero-carbon energy sector by 2050 is technically and economically feasible. It points to the trajectory set by the Concept of the Ministry of Energy for 2020–2030 and the ability of the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan to lead in action to combat climate change in Central Asia and beyond, while maintaining sustainable economic growth.
