A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the National Nuclear Security Administration within the US Department of Energy (NNSA/DOE) and the Uzbekistan’s Customs Committee, following the meeting between the US Ambassador to Uzbekistan Pamela Spratlen and the First Deputy Chairman of the Uzbek Customs Committee, Bakhtiyar Raimov.

This document will enhance the customs committee's capacity to detect radioactive substances, which will ensure the country's security from radioactive substances and lay the foundation for future cooperation, the US Embassy to Uzbekistan said in a statement.

During the meeting, the sides discussed bilateral cooperation to prevent illegal trade in nuclear and radioactive substances.

The US Ambassador congratulated the State Customs Committee and noted that, in addition to technical assistance, the MoU will enable the NNSA/DOE to provide assistance for sustainable development and share best practices. This event and the signing of the MoU serve as an example of US-Uzbek cooperation in the field of security.
